Call for applications: Free online course in research writing for environmental health researchers

We are pleased to announce the third AuthorAID–Blacksmith online course in writing up environmental health research for publication. We welcome applications from qualified researchers in eligible low and middle income countries who are keen to improve their skills in writing up research for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

The 5-week course will run from August 18 to September 21, 2014, and is entirely online. There is no cost to apply or participate. Participants are expected to set aside at least 3 to 4 hours per week to go through online lessons, engage in online discussions with classmates, and complete activities including an abstract writing assignment. Successful participants will receive a completion certificate. Please see the course outline for more information.

Eligibility

This course is open to researchers focusing on heavy metals, pesticides, radionuclides, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other severe and persistent toxicants.

Researchers focusing on the following are NOT eligible for this course: greenhouse gases or climate change impacts, adaptation or vulnerability; ambient air pollution; sewage and non-toxic municipal waste; biological or chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD); noise pollution; and pollution which has no potential human health impact, or for which there is no pathway to humans.

To be eligible for the course, researchers must be citizens of, and research must relate to countries in WHO Mortality Stratum B-E (http://www.who.int/whr/2003/en/member_states_182-184_en.pdf).

The application deadline is July 27, 2014. Following a competitive selection process, successful applicants will be notified by August 11, and they will be given an enrollment key to join the course.
